Improving citizen’s quality of life is a common objective between the two Operational Programmes through which Malta is implementing Cohesion Policy 2007-2013. Improved healthcare systems are therefore a major investment, particularly through the European Regional Development Fund under Operational Programme I.
Following the construction of the Mater Dei Hospital, the construction and development of the state-of-the-art Oncology Centre within the hospital’s precincts aims to improve the provision of cancer treatment in Malta while also assisting families who have patients in their care.
Facilitating access to healthcare is another concern being addressed through Operational Programme I. Citizens in Gozo are no longer required to cross over to Malta in order to undergo CT scanning and mammography imaging and the upgrading of the Operating Theatre at the Gozo General Hospital also provides Gozitans with the possibility of undergoing necessary surgical interventions closer to home. All this reduces the physical and emotional burden both for themselves and their carers.
Complementary actions co-financed under the European Social Fund include more flexible e-learning programmes for medical professionals in order to promote continued development in their field. These initiatives also aim to increase the number of medical professionals who remain in Malta and provide their services within the Maltese health system.
