ERDF 088: Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources in the Domestic Sector

Spiża tal-proġett: €14,573,886
Benefiċjarju: Malta Resources Authority
Line Ministry: Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs (MRRA)
Start Date: 2008
End Date: 2015

Non Technical Short Summary Of Project

The Renewable Energy (RES) scheme provides a financial support to cover part of the investment costs of domestic RES equipment (solar water heater and photovoltaic panels). Available funds will be allocated according to the type of equipment purchased. Households will be eligible for RES infrastructure/ equipment in line with the Guidance note on eligibility of energy and renewable energies interventions under the ERDF and Cohesion Fund (2007-2013) in the building sector including housing.

Operational Programme: OPI Investing in Competitiveness for a Better Quality of Life ERDF
Fund: European Regional Development Fund
Operational Objective: To promote the use of RES and energy efficiency and reduction in the use of non-renewable energy sources;
Priority Axis: PA4 Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change
Focus Area Of Intervention: OPIPA4 Energy

Project Objectives

The overall objective of the project is the increased use of RES and energy efficient equipment coupled with a decrease in energy pattern in energy patterns , leading to a cleaner and healthier environment (resulting from decreased dependence on traditional energy sources and emissions from the burning of fuels from traditional energy sources). The objective of the education campaign is to induce a market transformation where the demand for RES equipment will increase as a result of public perception on energy saving and acquisition of RES equipment.

Project Results

By the end of this project the share of RES is expected to increase by 400 units (5,239 in 2008) for solar water heater per year and 815kWp for photovoltaic's for each year the scheme is in operation. The scheme also contributes towards Malta's 10% energy target by 2020. By 2012 a target of 2.5% is expected to be achieved and the PV scheme will achieve 17% of the PV targets for 2020.

Project Purpose

1) Improvement in energy efficiency and reduction in traditional energy sources;2) Increasing the share of renewable energy in the energy mix; 3) Reduction of green house gas emissions;4) Reduction in energy usage patterns; and 5) Less reliability on traditional sources of energy and on foreign energy provision
